A Natural Antihistamine-like to reduce Allergies and Hypersensitivity on Skin & Scalp

Allergy, hypersensitivity, atopy: all these pathological conditions are due to overreaction of the immunity systemto common substances, usually harmless, that become “allergens”. This process is closely related to the release of histamine, the most important chemical mediator of allergic reactions, and this is the reason why anti-allergic drugs are called “antihistamine”.

Skin is one of the parts of our body most involved in allergies, because it is a “defensive barrier” highly exposed to allergens.

There is an influence from genetic factors that determinates a sort of allergic predisposition, but also enviromental factors play here an important role. In the range of enviromental factors we find pollution, food ingredients, drugs and also cosmetic products for every day use. In fact, cosmetics could contain ingredients able to act as allergens. This is why the Cosmetic Regulation prescribes the declaration on label of the allergens contained in the product formulation.

In the past few years, this topic has become more and more popular for both skin and hair application: the attention paid to allergens has increased, in order to avoid adverse reactions. At the same time the search for “antihistamine-like” substances was started in order to offer cosmetic solutions able to prevent and fight allergic reactions on the skin. Several anti-allergic products can be found on the market, as well as formulations dedicated to atopic skin, sensitive skin and scalp.

A new trend of application for anti-allergic and “antihistamine-like” products is in the world of hair dyes. Some of the ingredients contained in hair dyes could be aggressive to the scalp and they might cause irritation, redness and itching. A very innovative approach is combining hair dyes with ingredients able to protect the scalp, but at the same time not interfering with the hair color.

Amik proposes a natural “antihistamine-like” ingredient to reduce allergies and hypersensitivity on skin & scalp:

REACTIVE DPG: pure Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, a natural ingredient obtained from licorice root and used in traditional medicine. It inhibits the production of leukotriene, strongly involved in inflammation and immunitary answer, and most of all reduces the release of histamine – the main chemical mediator of allergies – with excellent antiphlogistic and anti-allergic functions.
